Memorial Day is a lot more than just a three-day weekend.

Now held on the last Monday in May and heralded as the official start of summer, the first celebration on record took place May 1, 1865. More than 10,000 newly freed slaves gathered then amidst the ruins of Charleston, South Carolina, to honor fallen Union soldiers. Along with white teachers and missionaries, they sang hymns, decorated graves and mourned those who fought and died for their freedom.  What a beautiful example of unity, gratitude and respect – all of which are much-needed throughout our country and world these days.

Here’s a simple Memorial Day primer to share with a young person in your life:

May you and yours enjoy peace and reflection today in honor of those who deserve to be commemorated.

True patriotism springs from a belief in the dignity of the individual, freedom and equality not only for Americans but for all people on earth.
