For All The Dads Out There

father sitting with son who has disabilities

Welcome to another issue of my free e-newsletter.  This one celebrates fathers everywhere and is dedicated to my dear deceased dad and also to John, the amazing father of our wonderful adult children. I love them both to bits.

Being a dad can be very challenging, especially when kids with disabilities enter the picture. My hat goes off (and my heart goes out) to fathers everywhere who are stepping up to the increased responsibilities they face, reaching out for the support they need to really do right by their families, and "embracing another normal.”

I hope this newsletter helps in that regard, and I welcome the chance to connect anytime if I can help further.

What happens when you have to let go of the person who has been holding you up?

As the father of an adult son with disabilities, my friend and acclaimed author, Jim Kokoris, knows all about this.  It’s actually the focus of his wonderful novel:

The story’s main character, John Nichols, is a 50-something year old father of three. Having devoted his life to care for his disabled son, John finds himself caught in the tension between being a parent and being true to himself.

It’s. Nice. Outside. is a funny yet poignant tale from an author who truly knows about such struggles.  As one reviewer describes it, “Jim’s heartwarming novel of a man coping with his beloved and disabled son moved me from tears to laughter.  Kokoris tells the story with humanity, humor, and most of all, affection.  It’s. Nice. Outside. moves beyond stereotypes to show how we are all capable of love and being loved. I. Love. This. Book.”

Two Thumbs Up

Earlier this week, I went to see the new movie, “Ezra.” Full transparency:  I love Bobby Canavale and Robert DeNiro, two of its stars, so I’m not exactly unbiased in this review. Still, I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.

Although Bobby’s son in the film has autism, the movie isn’t just about that. In fact, autism felt like more of a supporting character to me in this film.  “Ezra” is really just about love and family – the heartache, joy, challenges, not knowing-ness, and grief we all experience as parents.  Disability and divorce complicate things for sure, but the movie felt more universal in scope to me.

As film critic Roger Ebert explains, "The film's portrayal of parental worry and how worry can tap people's reserves, making them act irrationally or impulsively, is insightful and perceptive."  I couldn't agree more.

While all the drama and dysfunction make for a great film, "Ezra" is a sad reminder of the heavy toll and emotional roller coaster many of us experience as parents. Building community and getting professional help, neither of which are depicted in the film, are key. I wondered how the story would have changed if the characters had dealt with their grief in more healthy ways.

Still, I loved watching this tale unfold and the all-star cast is wonderful to watch.  I'm delighted the movie makers chose an actor with autism to play an autistic character, too.

Here's more from the screenwriter on how his 25-year-old autistic son inspired this work.

Sense of humor. Priceless.

The jury is still out for this Father's Day, but this is my favorite of all the gifts our family exchanged last year. From our son, Andrew, to his dad (my beloved husband, John).  Say no more. :)
