Don't Fall Into 'Empty'

May 16, 2024

I’ve been a mother for nearly 30 years. It’s been wonderful, frustrating, joy-filled, terrifying, challenging, exhilarating, and not at all what I expected. Thankfully, I’ve been supported by other moms and dads and friends and family and people who care — supported in a way that helps me be the best mother I can be, on any given day at any given time. Isn’t that what we all strive for?

Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love, and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.

– Stevie Wonder

“"Where you tend a rose my lad, a thistle cannot grow." —Frances Hodgson Burnett

My community of support continues to teach me many things, including the importance of tending to myself along with caring for my family. As positive psychologist Gretchen Rubin recommends, “Don't let yourself fall into 'empty.' Keep cash in the house. Keep gas in your tank. Keep an extra roll of toilet paper squirreled away. Keep your phone charged.” To that, I would add “Keep your supporters close. Call on them often. Thank them regularly.” We need each other.

So, I’m thanking you this morning. And wishing Happy Mother’s Day to each of you, whether you are yourself a mother or someone who loves a special mom in special ways.

I hope you find time today to fill your cup. To keep yourself from falling into ‘empty.’ To celebrate yourself. I celebrate you.
